The haiku flower prompt that inspired “Open Window” reads “Red Amaryllis/Basking in the winter sun – /Someone is singing!” Writer Tonia Markou has masterfully combined all the elements of the prompt into a brief gem that invites the reader to read and re-read.
It is no small feat to create a powerfully evocative story in just a few words.
Congratulations, Tonia!
Open Window
She always leaves her window open. Even in winter.
Sometimes I lean against the rough wall below to listen to her voice. Sweet and clear like glockenspiel. She sings of warmth, belonging, home.
I dive my hands deep into the pockets of my coat, protecting them from the cold, from the prospect of not knowing what to do with them.
Her hair’s as scarlet red as the amaryllis on the sill.
I wish she would let me in. Opened arms, drowning me in membrane-thin petals.
The sun emerges from behind a cumulus cloud. I close my eyes and breathe in.
